1.A periodontist is a dental specialist who specialises in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease and in the placement of implants.
Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas and have an additional education of at least three years after the dental degree.
2. Often dentists refer patients to a periodontist when the disease is advanced. However, you do not need a referral to see a periodontist. If you have any doubt you can consult a periodontist directly.

Periodontal diseases are diseases of the mouth that are caused by bacterial plaque. This bacterial plaque produces toxins and enzymes that destroy the attachment of the gum to the tooth, and then the supporting bone. If the bacterial plaque is not removed, it can calcify, then called calculus. Daily oral hygiene with effective brushing, and flossing prevents periodontal disease.
The disease may either gingivitis which is a gum infection or periodontitis which is both a bone and gum infection.
X-rays and a careful oral examination by your dentist are needed to diagnose periodontal disease, which is usually not painful and can remain undetected for a long time.
Periodontal disease is aggravated by smoking and more difficult to cure in smokers. Other factors that can affect the periodontal tissues are stress, medication, pregnancy, medical conditions such as diabetes and several other factors.
It has also been reported that periodontal disease can affect your heart and the health of the unborn baby for women.
